What is Wisdom Tooth, Symptoms and Problems?

The wisdom tooth is the last set of molar teeth at the back of the mouth. Four teeth, 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom at both sides erupt at the end of the mouth. Wisdom tooth comes at or after the late teen. As after teenage person's mind grow in different perspective thinking change, a person learns in a better way from experiences, that's why it is called a wisdom tooth. Wisdom tooth doesn't make the person smarter rather it Is named so because it comes in old teenage i.e. from 17 to 21 years of age

When wisdom teeth start coming it's quite painful, irritating feeling as the tooth has to come underneath the skin and erupt out of the gums. Because of this swelling in the jaw bone, swelling on cheeks. Sometimes molar wisdom tooth comes in an odd position which disturbs the position of the parallel tooth, the problem in the jaw bone, infection in the jaw bone or other teeth beside it.

Symptoms of Wisdom Tooth
  • Pain in the jaw bone
  • Swelling in jaw or cheeks
  • Irritation around the area of molar teeth
  • Swollen or red gums
  • Bad odor from mouth
  • Tasteless taste buds or unpleasant taste in the mouth
  • Feels difficulty in speaking or opening mouth
  • Infection in gums or tooth beside molar tooth which has to erupt
The angle in Which Tooth Comes Out
  • Wisdom tooth comes out at the end of the mouth next to the second molar
  • It grows in right angle if not it can cause a problem
  • Grow upwards and stay trapped in the jawbone.
  • Some teeth grow in the horizontal direction which causes the problem to gums and second molar but stay trapped in jawbone only.
Problems that Can Occur

Some wisdom tooth grows horizontally or irrationally which damages the second molar teeth. It also risks of infection or pushes the second lar increases the pressure result in more infection to teeth and overcrowding of teeth. This requires treatment at the right time.

While the growth of tooth sac from which it grows within jawbone can fill with fluid, or infection of bacteria which can damage nerves, jawbone and other teeth. This requires treatment in which tooth, tissue or bone is removed.

Because of unhygienic conditions or its difficult to clean last molar teeth can lead to tooth decay. As food gets trapped and bacteria grow around it leading to bad smell and infection.

Pericoronitis gum problem can occur because of the growth of wisdom tooth in that area.


Growth of wisdom tooth can not be prevented but regular appointments for 6 months with the dentist and proper hygiene of mouth can help to prevent problems. The doctor can take X-Rays and check the growth of the tooth. As regular check-ups will prevent symptoms of problems which can arise. When a wisdom tooth is in the process of erupting soft food is better to eat as it will not get trapped at the end of the jawbone and easy to swallow.
